All too often, the word humility causes a person to think in terms of weakness, but just the opposite is true. Let’s take time for the next few days to see what God has to say about humility in His Word. In our scripture verse today we see that we are to be clothed with humility. Certainly individuals, whose hearts are hungry for God, have the desire to walk out, in their lives, what the Bible has to say about this important subject. However, in a person's life there are things that can take place that encourage pride to become the stronger vessel and then it sometimes takes years to recognize the pride and cast it aside.
I remember there were bicycle parades in our town when I was a little girl. You could decorate your bicycle and then enter the parade. The judges voted on the best in the parade. My folks loved this kind of thing and so they decorated my little bike, made me a matching costume, and entered me into this parade. I think we did this several times. I always won first prize. I'm sure it made them feel good and I think it started building up a sense of pride in me. I didn't know it at the time, but over the years as I desired to walk in a more Godlike way, I began to remember some of these things from the past. It was something that I knew needed correcting in my life.
Humility is really putting our entire dependence on God - a total yielding to Him. It is the deep, strong, root that reaches down to the bedrock of God. The exact opposite of humility is pride – which really is the root of sin and the evil it produces. When you see a lack of love, a judgmental attitude, a quick irritating temper, or a bitter spirit, you can be assured that the root of the problem is pride in some form. Pride is always seeking for itself!
What would you say is the only soil in which God's grace can take root? It is the rich soil of a true spirit of humility. It is the solid rock of Jesus Christ which undergirds the rich soil in which all the virtues and attributes of God can grow in us. The more we understand that God is All, the more we will cast out the pride and allow humility to stake its roots in our spirit, grow in our soul, and bear fruit in our lives. However, humility does not just happen! It never just appears on its own. Humility is rooted in a hungry heart that desires to walk in God's perfect will; it is gained through the study and meditation of God's Word, prayer, faith, persistence and determination. This allows Jesus, through His Holy Spirit, to activate His humility through our lives.
To those who want to walk the path of life in Christ here and now, this means a clear, persevering, persistence to be all we can be in the likeness of Jesus Christ. If this was not possible, do you think God would have given us a whole book on how to do it?
We do it through Jesus being the Lord of our lives. He is the only one who can do it. When He lives in us as His Holy Spirit, step-by-step we can come to this true place of humility. This will manifest itself in the life of the believer as the true humility of Jesus, which He came to teach us, and it is the only thing that brings glory to God. Why? Because humility is the bedrock for all that God's grace embraces. We are going to think about this for a few days because it is a vital truth to learn! Catch it and run with it!
